Will Reed in his studio
William Reed was born and raised in the Ozark mountain region of northern Arkansas.  He was educated in this rural area until his early twenties.  At age twenty-three he left Arkansas to pursue his journey as a painter.  Stopping first in Baltimore, Reed studied painting and drawing at the Maryland Institute College of Art in the Post-Baccalaureate program.  While there he studied under Sangram Majumdar and Sharon Yates.  He was also advised by Bill Schmidt, the director of the program.  Upon completion of his Post-Baccalaureate certificate he left Baltimore, moving to New York City to attend Teacher's College Columbia University in their Masters of Arts Education program.  Before going, Reed had a transformative experience while painting on the shores of New Brunswick, Canada.  While participating in a painting marathon there taught by Sharon Yates, he found his true passion and path in life was painting.  While he carried through with his matriculation at Teacher's College, one semester was all it took to prove that art education did not satisfy his need for everyday involvement with painting.  During his days off from Teacher's College, Reed built a small portfolio of landscape paintings executed in Brooklyn's Greenwood Cemetery.  Using these paintings he applied to the New York Studio School of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture.  He is currently a second year MFA painting student there and studies with the dean of the school Graham Nickson.

Reed spends his days painting and drawing from life.  On weekends he sculpts from the figure and draws at the NYC area museums.  He resides in Brooklyn.  During the winter and summer months he sustains a second studio in his hometown in northern Arkansas.  Here he mainly focuses on the landscape and long-term sustained paintings of the figure.
